For such a tiny gland it plays a very huge roll in the body. Thyroid is Greek for shield, after the shape of the cartilage. This particular gland regulates how rapidly the body uses energy, produces proteins, and influences the sensitivity the body should be to the other hormones. It generates thyroid hormones, with the principal ones being triiodothyronine and thyroxine, T3 and T4 respectively. This hormonal output gets regulated by a thyroid-stimulating hormone produced by the anterior pituitary, and this in itself is by the hypothalamus.
Your thyroid is composed of spherical shape follicles that are selective in how they absorb iodine from your blood with the purpose of producing thyroid hormones. But it also stores it in the thyroglobulin. Iodine is necessary in other important organs such as the stomach, thymus, breast and salivary glands, to name a few. Please be aware that cancers can occur in the thyroid gland and seem to be more common in females. It will appear as a painless lump in the neck. It can be diagnosis by using a needle biopsy.
One good thing is that the majority of these thyroid lumps are benign or non-cancerous. These problems with your thyroid can be so devastating. But what is worse is when you know there is something wrong and your doctor is telling you that all your tests look normal. That is why this project is so important. It is a place for you to finally turn things around.
